THE Kebbi State House of Assembly has elected Salihu Maikasuwa-Dangoje, the lawmaker representing Sakaba Constituency, as its new Speaker.
Dangoje emerged through a unanimous vote by members during plenary today at the Assembly Complex in Birnin Kebbi.
His election followed the death of former Speaker, Mohammed Usman-Zuru, who passed away on April 7, 2026, in Cairo, Egypt, while undergoing medical treatment.
The Clerk of the House, Sulaiman Shamaki, who presided over the session, explained that the election was conducted in accordance with Section 92(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which mandates state assemblies to elect a Speaker from among their members whenever the position becomes vacant.
The nomination of Dangoje was moved by Adamu Birnin-Yauri, representing Ngaski Constituency, and seconded by Lawal Haruna of Fakai Constituency.
In supporting the nomination, Birnin-Yauri highlighted Dangoje’s 11 years of legislative experience and his service in various leadership capacities within the Assembly.
Following the election, Shamaki administered the oath of office to the new Speaker.
In his acceptance speech, Dangoje expressed appreciation to his colleagues for entrusting him with the leadership role.
He pledged to provide transparent, inclusive, and purposeful leadership while promoting unity among lawmakers.
He also assured residents of Kebbi State that the Assembly would continue to enact people-focused legislation and strengthen its oversight responsibilities to support good governance and sustainable development.
Dangoje’s emergence marks a new chapter for the Assembly following the loss of the late Speaker, whose death created the leadership vacancy.
