THE Ebonyi State Police Command has requested that an autopsy be carried out to determine the cause of death of a 26-year-old nurse, Mary Habila, who was found dead at the country home of the Minister of Works, David Umahi, in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area.
The command said it is awaiting the presence of the deceased’s family before proceeding with the post-mortem examination as part of its ongoing investigation.
Police spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, disclosed that the incident was reported on June 27, 2026, after the Divisional Police Officer of Ohaozara Division received information about a medical emergency involving the nurse and proceeded to the David Umahi Federal Teaching Hospital, Uburu.
According to the police, medical personnel informed the DPO on arrival that Habila had already been brought to the hospital dead.
The Commissioner of Police subsequently directed that the matter be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a detailed investigation.
Preliminary findings reveal that Habila and a colleague, Anita Baaki, were members of the medical team attached to the Minister of Works and had accompanied him to his hometown in Uburu.
She reportedly died in a room within the minister’s residential compound.
Investigators have since visited the scene, taken statements from relevant individuals and commenced a comprehensive inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The police said a pathologist would be engaged to conduct a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death and support the investigation.
However, the command disclosed that the deceased’s family has objected to the autopsy, insisting that the examination should not be carried out.
Despite the family’s position, the police maintained that an autopsy is necessary because of the sensitive nature of the case and the need to establish the true cause of death.
The command added that it remains committed to conducting a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation and will provide further updates as the inquiry progresses.
