TEAM Nigeria took their medal haul to five gold at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games in Scotland today with two more titles in weightlifting.
All of Nigeria’s medals at these Games so far have come from para-powerlifting and weightlifting.
Edidiong Umoafia secured Nigeria’s first gold of the day by winning the men’s 71kg weightlifting title with a Commonwealth Games record total of 319kg.
He opened with a Games record 147kg in the snatch before lifting 172kg in the clean & jerk to seal victory.
Samoa’s Joseph Tafi claimed silver with 314kg, while Elgin Moses of Nauru bagged bronze with 310kg.
Onome Didih then added another title to Nigeria’s impressive collection produced in the women’s 53kg weightlifting event.
After breaking the Commonwealth Games record in the snatch with 93kg, Didih went on to set another Commonwealth Games record in the clean & jerk with 113kg, before completing a Commonwealth Games record total of 206kg to clinch gold.
She finished ahead of India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav (199kg) and Canada’s Rebeka Groulx (178kg).
