Team Nigeria failed in their bid to win bronze in the men’s table tennis team event at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games today.
The team lost the third-place match 3-0 to hosts England, ending their medal quest in disappointment.
In the first match-up, the doubles, England pair Tim Jarvis and Paul Drinkhall defeated Nigeria’s Bode Abiodun and Olajide Omotayo 3-0 (11-6, 11-7, 11-7).
Team Nigeria hoped to level the match in the first singles contest, but world No.2 Quadri Aruna put up a poor display.
England’s Liam Pitchford eased past Aruna 3-1 (11-9, 9-11, 12-10, 11-6).
Nigeria had to win the second singles clash to stay in the match, but Omotayo lost to Drinkhall 3-0 (11-4, 11-2, 11-4).
Team Nigeria had lost their semi-final 3-0 to India last night, while England had succumbed to Singapore.
India and Singapore will battle for the gold medal later today.
