Spain progressed to the finals of the UEFA Nations League tonight with a 1-0 victory over Portugal in Braga.

Alvaro Morata struck in the 88th minute to give the visitors the win they needed to overtake Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal and secure top spot in League A Group 2.

Spain join Croatia, The Netherlands and Italy in next year’s finals where France’s successors as champions will emerge.

In the group’s other game tonight, Switzerland defeated visiting Czech Republic 2-1 to finish in third place.

Remo Freuler and Breel Emboli netted in the first half to end Switzerland’s campaign with nine points, two fewer than group winners Spain.

Runners-up Portugal finished with 10 points in the very tightly contested group.

Also tonight, Scotland earned promotion from League B to League A after a 0-0 draw with Ukraine in Cracow, Poland.

The point from the game helped maintain Scotland’s top position as Ukraine, playing at their temporary ‘home’, failed to secure the three points they needed to win Group 1.

Republic of Ireland avoided relegation to League C with a 3-2 win in Dublin over Armenia, who dropped down instead.

The striker with Nigerian heritage, Michael Obafemi, scored Ireland’s third goal while two Armenia players were sent off in the final two minutes.

In other UEFA Nations League fixtures tonight, Serbia defeated their hosts Norway 2-0 to confirm promotion to League A.

Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic and Fulham forward Aleksandar Mitrovic scored for Serbia while prolific Norway hitman Erling Haaland had a rare barren night.

Sweden and Slovenia drew 1-1 in the group’s other clash as the former got relegated to League C.
