Nigeria’s Bayelsa Queens secured their first three points of the 2022 CAF Women’s Champions League tonight with a 2-0 over TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo in Marrakech, Morocco.

The Nigerian champions had lost their opening match, also in Marrakech, to holders Mamelodi Sundowns on Monday and had to win tonight to keep alive their hopes of reaching the semi-finals.

Ogoma Joseph gave Bayelsa Queens the opening goal in the third minute from the penalty spot as the Nigeria Women’s Football League champions began brightly.

Bayelsa Queens were dominant and continued to create opportunities, but missed quite a few.

They got the second goal in the 24th minute through Chinyere Igbomalu and it appeared as if a rout was coming.

There were no further goals in the first half, however, as Bayelsa Queens continued to waste good chances.

The pattern stayed the same in the second half, and Bayelsa Queens could not get a third goal despite all the openings they created.

In Group B’s other fixture earlier today, Mamelodi Sundowns trounced Wadi Degla of Egypt 5-0, the South Africans becoming the first side to score five goals in a single match in the competition.

Sundowns lead the group with six points, followed by Bayelsa Queens and TP Mazembe on three each, while Wadi Degla have no points.

Bayelsa Queens will advance to the semi-finals if they beat Wadi Degla on Sunday night in Rabat and TP Mazembe drop points against already qualified Mamelodi Sundowns.
