SUPER Eagles and Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface has won the Bundesliga Player of the Season award.

The award is for players in their first season in the German top flight, and the Nigeria international was voted the winner among four nominees.

The other players up for the award were Xavi Simons of RB Leipzig, Ian Maatsen of Borussia Dortmund and Maximilian Beier of Hoffenheim.

Boniface joined Bayer Leverkusen from Union St Gilloise last July for €20m and has been a key figure for Xabi Alonso’s side.

Despite missing 11 Bundesliga matches from mid-January to late March, the 23-year-old Nigerian contributed immensely to Leverkusen’s first-ever Bundesliga title.

Boniface has registered 13 goals and nine assists in 22 Bundesliga appearances (17 starts), making him one of Alonso’s most important players.

Overall in all competitions, the Super Eagles star has an impressive 20 goals and 10 assists in 32 matches.

Boniface was named Bundesliga Rookie of the Month a record four times in a row before his adductor injury in January, which led to him missing the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.
