THE Akwa Ibom State Police Command has recovered a large cache of live ammunition and arrested a suspect, along with several individuals accused of obstructing police officers during a routine operation.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, DSP Timfon John.

According to the statement, police operatives, while conducting a stop-and-search operation along the Calabar–Itu Highway on January 23, 2026, at about 11:00 p.m., intercepted a commercial bus with registration number ARR600ZY heading towards Calabar.

A thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a carton containing 415 live cartridges.

The bus was driven by a man identified as Ikenna and had several passengers onboard.

During questioning, the driver reportedly denied ownership of the ammunition, claiming it was being transported as a waybill consignment to an unidentified recipient in Calabar.

The police said the operation was disrupted when a passenger identified as Excel allegedly obstructed officers by engaging in provocative behaviour.

Another passenger, identified as Bright, who claimed to be an official of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), also allegedly joined in assaulting the officers but failed to produce valid identification. Both individuals were arrested at the scene.

Further investigations led to the arrest of a 36-year-old man, Ndubisi Raphael, a native of Nyaje village in Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State, who was apprehended in Calabar and taken into police custody.

The Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, Baba Mohammed Azae, has ordered a discreet and comprehensive investigation to determine the source and intended use of the recovered ammunition, with a view to prosecuting all those found culpable.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to curbing the spread of illegal arms and ammunition and warned members of the public against interfering with officers in the lawful execution of their duties.

The commissioner also assured residents that the police remain dedicated to ensuring peace and security across the state.
