AUTHORITIES in the United States have apprehended a suspect in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of a Nigerian graduate, Oluwalayomi “Layo” Fadero.

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department confirmed the arrest of Ray Eugene Padgett, who is linked to the tragic incident.

According to reports from local media, the incident occurred on Friday after the suspect allegedly stole a vehicle and attempted to evade arrest.

Details indicate that the vehicle’s owner was able to track its location, which reportedly triggered a violent reaction from the suspect upon realizing he was being followed.

He is said to have reversed into another vehicle before attempting to escape.

Law enforcement officials deployed aerial surveillance to monitor the situation, but the suspect allegedly intensified the case by crashing into an unmarked police vehicle, leading to a high-speed chase.

A police spokesperson explained that officers intended to track the vehicle until it stopped before moving in to make an arrest.

The pursuit, which lasted about five minutes, reportedly reached speeds of up to 80 miles per hour along Murfreesboro Pike toward the county line.

It ended around 2:30 p.m. when the suspect drove into oncoming traffic near the intersection of Murfreesboro Pike and Hickory Woods Drive.

Police said the suspect collided with a white sedan driven by Fadero, forcing the vehicle nearly 100 yards into a ditch.

The 23-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

Padgett was subsequently taken into custody and transported to a hospital.

He has been charged with criminal homicide.

Authorities also revealed that he was on parole at the time, suggesting that his actions set off the chain of events that led to the death of the young graduate.

The incident has sparked widespread grief, especially among members of the Fisk University community, where Fadero studied.

A fellow alumna expressed sorrow over the tragedy, noting how close the victim was to her home at the time of the crash.

A former lecturer also paid tribute, describing Fadero as compassionate and selfless, and commending her commitment to helping others.

In honour of her memory, a temporary memorial has been set up at the crash site along Murfreesboro Pike.

Meanwhile, a fundraising campaign launched to support her family with funeral expenses has raised over $15,000 as of the time of reporting.
