NATIONAL: NIMC strike leaves applicants stranded across the country

NIGERIANS who have showed up at NIMC offices across the country have been left unattended as staff of the Identification commission began a nationwide strike on Thursday.

According to a statement earlier issued, the staff embarked on the strike demanding a better salary structure and safer environment considering the surge of applicants and nationwide Covid-19 cases.

At one of the NIMC offices, in Alausa, Lagos, applicants were seen as early as 8am in their numbers but weren’t attended to by the workers, who said they were on strike.

According to one of the workers, the increased population of applicants have become very stressful, hence their demand for a better pay.

A major matter of concern to them is the negligence of their safety by the Federal Government, as they were with protective gears.

Some also claimed that some staff members had been infected by the coronavirus but neglected by the management.

The NIMC staff decried the prevalent flouting of the Covid-19 protocols, due to the large turn up for registration daily.

The workers pledged to continue the strike until their demands were responded to.

They also stated that their refusal to work is based on a directive given by the NIMC Unit of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, which affiliated to the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
