“The prize remains free to enter for all citizens of the 56 Commonwealth countries, who are aged 18 or over. We are pleased to expand this opportunity and welcome writers from Gabon and Togo for this year’s prize. Head to our website for the important information you will need before submitting, including word limits and accepted languages,” adds the release.

Would be participants have been advised to follow the prize on the social media handles — Facebook, Twitter and Instagram — of the Prize project.

The Prize administrators say: “This competition is for everyone – wherever you’re from in the Commonwealth, whether you’re an emerging writer or an established storyteller. So please do submit your story by the 1 November deadline.

“We will announce the overall winner in June 2023. They will receive £5000 and the five regional winners will receive £2500 each. All winning stories will be published online in Granta magazine.

“Ntsika Kota, a self-taught writer from Eswatini, made headlines worldwide after winning the 2022 prize. Ntsika offered his advice for writers entering the prize this year: ‘Breathe life into an idea. Write something that is uniquely you. Then edit it to the best of your ability.

“Watch out for insightful tips from Ntsika and other previous prize winners, who know exactly what it takes to succeed in the competition.

“You will also encounter a passionate and supportive writing community of thousands.”
