Erling Haaland and Mikel Arteta have been named Premier League Player of the Month and Manager of the Month respectively for August.

The winners were announced today after votes from the public and a panel of football experts were tallied.

New Manchester City signing Haaland scored a record nine goals in his first month in the English top flight, while Arteta led Arsenal to win all their five matches during the month under review.

Haaland scored against West Ham United, Newcastle United, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest, and got an assist in his other appearance, against AFC Bournemouth.

The 22-year-old Norwegian’s nine goals in his first five appearances were the most in Premier League history, breaking the record of eight previously held by Mick Quinn and Sergio Aguero.

Haaland also became only the sixth player to score hat-tricks in consecutive Premier League appearances, doing so against Palace and Forest to be the first to achieve the feat since Harry Kane in 2017.

He is also the first player to win the award in his first month in the competition since Bruno Fernandes did so for Manchester United in February 2020.

Haaland won the award ahead of Pascal Gross, Gabriel Jesus, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Martin Odegaard, Nick Pope, Rodrigo and Wilfried Zaha.

On his part, Arteta has won the manager award for the third time after becoming only the second Arsenal manager after Arsene Wenger to start a season with five straight Premier League victories.

The Gunners began the season with a 2-0 victory at Crystal Palace before beating Leicester City 4-2 at Emirates Stadium.

A 3-0 win at Bournemouth kept the streak going and Arteta’s side rounded off the month with back-to-back 2-1 home wins over Fulham and Aston Villa.

Their strong start to the season propelled them to the top of the table with a maximum 15 points.

Arteta’s latest Manager of the Month award follows his previous successes in September 2021 and March 2022.

The 40-year-old Spaniard beat Antonio Conte, Pep Guardiola, Graham Potter and Marco Silva to the award.
