UNL: Denmark stun France as Croatia reach finals, Austria relegated

Denmark produced a classy display tonight in Copenhagen to beat France 2-0, but it was not enough to take the hosts to the finals of the UEFA Nations League.

Defending champions France were uninspiring against the enterprising Danes who needed the victory to stay in contention for top spot in League A Group 1 and a place in the finals.

However, Croatia defeated their hosts Austria in Vienna 3-1 to finish on top of the group and secure a spot in the finals.

In Copenhagen, Kasper Dolberg and Andreas Olsen struck in the first half against France to finish with 12 points, just one behind Croatia.

The Croatians knew victory against Austria would guarantee them first place and they got the win with goals from Luka Modric, Marko Livaja and Dejan Lovren.

While Croatia made it to the finals, Austria have been relegated to League B.

In Group 4, also tonight, The Netherlands sealed top spot with a 1-0 win over Belgium, Virgil van Dijk scoring the only goal 17 minutes from time.

The Dutch eased to the finals with 16 points, six more than second-placed Belgium.

Poland finished third in the group with seven points after a 1-0 win in Wales, who got relegated to League B without winning any of their six games.

Karol Swiderski scored Poland’s only goal midway into the second half, assisted by Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski.

In other UEFA Nations League fixtures tonight in the lower divisions, Faroe Islands pulled off a shock 2-1 win over already promoted Turkey in League C, while Azerbaijan beat Kazakhstan 3-0 in a battle of former Soviet republics.
