CAF Women’s CL: Bayelsa Queens beaten by Mamelodi Sundowns

Nigeria’s representatives at the CAF Women’s Champions League, Bayelsa Queens, lost their opening game in the competition in Morocco today.

The Nigeria Women’s Football League champions lost 2-1 to Mamelodi Sundowns, the defending champions, at the Grand Stade in Marrakech.

Lelona Daweti struck twice for the South Africans, while Mary-Magdalene Anjor pulled one back for the Nigerians.

Bayelsa Queens started the Group B encounter brightly and created chances but were undone by poor finishing.

The experienced holders rode the wave against the newcomers from Nigeria before pouncing with less than 10 minutes left in the first half.

Daweti opened the scoring for Mamelodi Sundowns and they took the 1-0 lead into half-time.

Sundowns made it 2-0 and put the game beyond Bayelsa Queens midway into the second half through Daweti again, who scored with a clever chip.

Bayelsa Queens, who won the WAFU B regional tournament before heading to Morocco, stepped up their attack and pulled one goal back late in the game through Anjor, but it was too little, too late.

The Nigerian side will next face Democratic Republic of Congo’s TP Mazembe in a must-win match on Thursday as they seek a ticket to the semi-finals.
