Carabao Cup: Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs out as Liverpool, Awoniyi’s Forest advance

London clubs Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham were all eliminated from the Carabao Cup tonight in the third round of the competition.

Chelsea were beaten 2-0 by Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, with second-half goals from Riyad Mahrez and Julian Alvarez.

Both sides made changes to their squad from the weekend’s Premier League matches, but the hosts were more cohesive and in control.

Chelsea’s best chances fell to youngster Lewis Hall but he was twice thwarted by City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega.

At the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal could not carry their Premier League form into the cup competition, losing 3-1 to visitors Brighton.

A much changed Arsenal took the lead in the 20th minute through Eddie Nketiah, but Brighton, who also made several changes, hit back seven minutes later through former Gunner Danny Welbeck from the penalty spot.

Kaoru Mitoma and Tariq Lamptey struck after the interval to send the Premier League leaders crashing out of the Cup.

At the City Ground, Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi was on from the start as Nottingham Forest defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-0.

Renan Lodi and Jesse Lingard scored the goals for Forest, who had Orel Mangala sent off in the 75th minute.

Another Nigeria international, Joe Aribo, also saw his club advance as Southampton overcame Sheffield Wednesday 6-5 on penalties after full-time ended 1-1.

Aribo was on for 60 minutes before making way for Theo Walcott.

In other Carabao Cup clashes tonight, Liverpool beat Derby Country 3-2 on penalties at Anfield, while West Ham lost 10-9 in an epic shootout to Blackburn Rovers after full-time ended 2-2.

Newcastle United also progressed to the fourth round 3-2 on penalties over Crystal Palace at St James’s Park after regulation time ended 0-0.
