Rivers United advance as Plateau crash out in CAFCC, Bayelsa Queens beaten

It was a night of mixed fortunes for Nigerian clubs in men’s and women’s continental competitions, with Rivers United, Plateau United and Bayelsa Queens all involved.

Nigeria Professional Football League champions Rivers United were the only ones with a positive result as they advanced to the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup.

Having won the first leg 5-0 in Port Harcourt last week, Rivers United progressed 6-1 on aggregate after a 1-1 draw in Libya with Al Nasr.

Rivers United, who dropped down from the CAF Champions League after losing out to holders Wydad Athletic, have now advanced to the Confederation Cup group phase.

However, NPFL runners-up Plateau United failed to make it through to the group phase of the competition after blowing a big advantage.

The Jos side had defeated another Libyan club Al Akhdar 4-1 last week in Abuja and just needed to avoid a wide-margin defeat today in the first leg.

Instead, despite a goalless first half, Plateau United lost 3-0 to the Libyans and were eliminated from the competition.

In the CAF Women’s Champions League, Bayelsa Queens lost their semi-final clash 1-0 to AS FAR of Morocco in Rabat also tonight.

Ibtissam Jraidi scored the only goal of the game in the first half to send the host club of the competition through to the final, where they will face champions Mamelodi Sundowns on Sunday.

Bayelsa Queens will battle Tanzania’s Simba Queens in the third-place match in Rabat on Saturday.
