Ten Hag, Rashford sure Man United will bounce back from Liverpool rout

MANCHESTER United will recover from the thrashing at the hands of Liverpool to have an impressive end to the season, Erik ten Hag and Marcus Rashford have promised.

The Red Devils were humiliated 7-0 by Liverpool in a Premier League clash at Anfield on Sunday, their worst-ever league defeat.

It came just one week after Ten Hag’s side had defeated Newcastle United 2-0 to win the Carabao Cup, their first trophy since 2017.

The Dutchman insists the embarrassing defeat stung and his side will not let it derail their campaign.

“It had a lot of lessons in it and it can help us in the future,” Ten Hag said during his pre-match press conference ahead of tomorrow’s UEFA Europa League round of 16 first leg against Real Betis.

“We were really below average, especially mentality-wise. We want to win trophies and you have to act different.

“We have to set conclusions, we did. We talked. From there we have to reset, bounce back.”

Ten Hag refused the idea that he was let down by the players, admitting that he also had a part to play in the defeat.

“No (they didn’t let me down). We are in the same boat,” he noted. “We do it with togetherness, win together, lose together. We made a mess on Sunday; we have to deal with that.

“This was a huge setback, clear, but we had a run with 23 games with one loss and that was the second.”

Ten Hag provided some team news, ruling out two players with injuries.

He said: “Marcel Sabitzer is not available, as well as Anthony Martial. Martial is back on the pitch, so we will see. For the rest, everyone is available and we are ready for the game.”

On his part, Manchester United’s top scorer this season with 25 goals in all competitions, Rashford, agreed that the players’ performance was horrendous but they never stopped trying.

“I missed a chance from Luke’s pass at 0-0. We should have gone in at half-time leading,” the England forward said at the same press conference.

“Liverpool can take the game away from you and that is what happened. We have to press the reset button.

“We didn’t give up. That is nonsense (to suggest we did).”

Ten Hag insisted Bruno Fernandes would remain the team’s deputy captain despite rumours that the Portugal midfielder could lose the armband over his petulant behaviour on Sunday.

“He is a really important role why we are in the position we are,” he explained. “He is an inspiration for the whole team. No-one is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes. When Harry (Maguire) is not on the pitch he is our captain.”

Rashford added on Fernandes: “I don’t have anything negative to say about Bruno. I support him 100 percent.”
