LIVERPOOL have confirmed that they are aware of the kidnapping of the parents of their player Luis Diaz in Colombia and are monitoring the situation.

The parents of the forward were kidnapped in his home country late last night after being stopped by gunmen on motorbikes.

His mother was later rescued but his father is still missing.

Cilenis Marulanda was rescued by police in the city of Barrancas, Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro told reporters.

“Liverpool Football Club can confirm it is aware of an ongoing situation involving the family of Luis Diaz in Colombia,” the club said in an official statement today.

“It is our fervent hope that the matter is resolved safely and at the earliest possible opportunity. In the meantime, the player’s welfare will continue to be our immediate priority.”

Colombia’s police director, General William Salamanca, said he is using every agent to find Diaz’s missing father.

The 26-year-old Colombian forward’s parents were reportedly kidnapped as they drove to their home.

They were at a petrol station when they were approached by armed men travelling on motorbikes, Sky News reported, adding that army resources have been deployed along with the police.

Colombia’s football federation said the kidnapping was regrettable, calling on authorities to rescue the father.
