Euro 2024: Portugal snatch late win vs Czech Republic as Turkey edge Georgia

PORTUGAL left it late tonight before completing a comeback to beat Czech Republic 2-1 in their Euro 2024 European Championship Group F clash in Leipzig, Germany.

The victory took the 2016 champions to second place in the group behind Turkey, who defeated Georgia 3-1 earlier in the evening.

With 39-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo leading the line and 41-year-old Pepe in central defence, Portugal fell behind to Lukas Provod’s fine strike from outside the box in the 62nd minute.

The lead did not last long though as Portugal equalised seven minutes later, with Robin Hranac inadvertently putting the ball in his own net.

Substitute Francisco Conceicao, whose father Sergio played and scored at Euro 2000, snatched a dramatic victory for Portugal in stoppage time, firing home after Czech Republic failed to properly clear a low cross.

In Group F’s first fixture today, Turkey and Georgia produced an exciting, end-to-end contest which the former settled late on.

The first half ended 1-1, with Georges Mikautadze’s strike in the 32nd minute cancelling out Mert Muldur’s opening goal for Turkey.

Arda Guler restored Turkey’s lead in the 65th minute but the game was still in the balance until seven minutes into added time when substitute Kerem Akturkoglu scored the ‘insurance goal’.
