MICHAEL Folorunsho, the Italy midfielder with Nigerian heritage, has said he is looking forward to tomorrow’s Euro 2024 European Championship clash against Spain whether he is in the startling line-up or not.
The 26-year-old was born in Rome to Nigerian parents and has made two substitute appearances for Italy, including a late cameo in their Euro 2024 opening 2-1 victory over Albania on Saturday.
Folorunsho was the designated Italy player at their press conference today along with coach Luciano Spalletti, and the Napoli midfielder said he would play any role the boss assigned to him.
“I think we are preparing for the game well; we are working hard and trying to make sure we are ready to go,” said Folorunsho, who was on loan at Verona last season.
“As for whether I’ll start I don’t know. You need to ask the gaffer for that. I am ready to step in, and it’s already an honour for me to be here. I’d like to be there and willing to step in for the lads and the team.”
He admitted that he never expected to be selected by Italy, especially for the European Championship, but he is relishing being at the tournament.
“It was impossible to think to be here 12 months ago. I don’t think I could have ever imagined it,” Folorunsho said.
“At the heart of that there is hard work. I never stopped dreaming and that drives me forward. When you get to a certain level you have to work even harder to make sure you stay there. This is just another starting point for me. I need to continue working hard.”
Although he came on in the 90th minute against Albania, Folorunsho was happy to play a part in the victory for the defending champions.
“It’s wonderful. It always feels great to meet Italians all around the world,” he added.
“Every time we train and step out of the hotel, Italians are always there to cheer us on and we are delighted. We gave them a smile in the opening game and we want to keep the Italian people proud of us.”
