TROOPS of the Nigerian Army have eliminated more than 60 terrorists in Mallam Fatori, located in Abadam Local Government Area of Borno State, in a major counter-insurgency operation.

According to military authorities, those killed include several high-ranking commanders linked to the Boko Haram/ISWAP group.

The insurgents were reportedly advancing on foot from the Duguri area, supported by armed drones, in an attempt to breach the 68 Battalion’s defensive position.

However, vigilant troops quickly detected the movement and responded with heavy firepower.

In a coordinated effort involving both ground forces and air support under Operation Hadin Kai, the attackers were decisively engaged, resulting in significant losses.

The intensity of the assault forced the remaining fighters to retreat in disarray toward the Arege area.

The military disclosed that follow-up operations are ongoing to track down fleeing insurgents, with intelligence and surveillance systems deployed to prevent them from regrouping.

Authorities also reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining pressure on terrorist elements and ensuring the protection of lives and property across the country.

This development comes just two days after a series of suicide bomb attacks in Maiduguri claimed at least 23 lives and left 108 others injured, sparking renewed concerns over security in the region.

In response to the attacks, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed security chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri.

Upon arrival at the Air Force Base, they were received by the Theatre Commander and proceeded to the headquarters of the Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai, where they are expected to engage with frontline troops, government officials, and other stakeholders on strategies to curb the resurgence of insurgent activities.

While the recent attacks caused widespread fear among residents, who had enjoyed relative peace in recent years, the Borno State Police Command has assured that calm has since been restored.

Ongoing security operations and investigations are being carried out to address the situation and prevent further incidents.
