SUPER Eagles of Nigeria star Alex Iwobi has been nominated for the March English Premier League Player of the Month award.
The Fulham midfieder is vying with six other players for the prize, including Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes and Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya.
The other nominees are James Garner (Everton), Morgan Gibbs-White of Nottingham Forest, Danny Welbeck of Brighton and Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon.
Iwobi earned his nomination following a stellar March for Fulham.
Although he scored only one goal as Fulham won two games, drew one and lost one in the period under review, Iwobi’s overall performances were excellent.
Describing Iwobi’s showings in March, the Premier League wrote: “Often regarded as one of the more underrated players in the Premier League, Iwobi receives recognition for the effortless ingenuity he has provided in a deeper midfield role for Fulham, who are now firmly in contention for European qualification.
“The Nigerian scored a wonderfully unique goal in Fulham’s win against Spurs on the first day of March, using his instep to provide an accurate finish across goal from outside of the box.”
The favourite for the award is Manchester United captain Fernandes, who registered at least one goal involvement in all four of his Premier League appearances in March, scoring two goals while supplying a further four assists.
Those four assists increased his haul for the season to 16, now the most by a Manchester United player in a single campaign, surpassing David Beckham’s 15 assists in 1999/2000.
The Portuguese is now four assists shy of matching the Premier League’s all-time single-season record, set by Thierry Henry in 2002/03 and Kevin De Bruyne in 2019/20 (20).
Fans, have until Monday afternoon to vote on the EA SPORTS website for one player from the shortlist.
The votes will be combined with the choices from a panel of experts to determine the winner, who will be announced next week.
