SAMUEL Ogazi has broken the men’s 400 metres Nigerian record set by Innocent Egbunike almost 40 years ago.

University of Alabama track star Samuel Ogazi delivered the historic performance at the Torrin Lawrence Memorial today, clocking a world-leading 44.02 seconds in the men’s 400m race.

With the time, 19-year-old undergraduate Ogazi broke the 44.17 seconds Nigerian record set by the legendary Innocent Egbunike in 1987.

The 44.02s is also the joint-sixth fastest in African history, along with Botswana’s Baboloki Thebe.

Ogazi’s time also smashed the University of Alabama school record, and now stands as the No.6 all-time mark in United States of America’s NCAA history.

Ogazi however narrowly missed out on the individual title in today’s competition, finishing second by just 0.005 seconds in a dramatic photo finish.
