A police officer attached to the Hotoro Division in Kano, identified as Sani S.O., has lost his life following a violent clash between rival thugs in the state, just weeks before his scheduled retirement.
According to a source close to the deceased, the officer was part of a police team deployed to break up the confrontation when he was allegedly shot by one of the hoodlums wielding a dane gun.
The source explained that the officer and his colleagues had moved in to disperse the groups involved in the fight, unaware that some of the suspects were armed.
“He was taken to the hospital immediately after the incident, but doctors later confirmed him dead,” the source said while requesting anonymity.
The late officer, who reportedly served in the police force for more than three decades, was described as a respected and community-oriented individual known for his contributions to society.
“He was a good man who positively impacted people around him. Sadly, he was only a few weeks away from retirement before the incident happened,” the source added.
Attempts to get an official response from the police proved unsuccessful, as the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, did not respond to calls or text messages before the report was filed.
In recent weeks, Kano has witnessed renewed incidents of thuggery and violent clashes across several parts of the city, including Fagge, Abattoir Market, Koki, Kurnar Asabe, Hotoro, and Gyadi-Gyadi.
The resurgence of violence comes amid growing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
