THE Enugu State Government has announced a temporary restriction on movement across the six local government areas within the Enugu North Senatorial District as preparations intensify for Saturday’s senatorial by-election.

The directive was disclosed today by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, through a public service announcement issued ahead of the poll.

According to the government, movement will be restricted from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 20, 2026, across all 102 electoral wards in the district to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process.

The statement noted that the measure is intended to support the smooth conduct of the by-election and maintain public order throughout the exercise.

However, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, security personnel, accredited election observers, journalists, and other individuals performing authorised election duties will be exempt from the restriction.

Residents and eligible voters are encouraged to participate peacefully in the election and adhere strictly to electoral guidelines.

The government also urged political parties, candidates, and their supporters to conduct themselves responsibly before, during, and after the poll.

Prof. Onyia stated that security agencies have been directed to enforce the restriction and ensure law and order across the affected areas throughout the election period.

He stressed the importance of peaceful participation, urging residents to exercise their civic rights responsibly while complying with all electoral regulations.

The state government expressed appreciation to residents for their cooperation and understanding, while expressing optimism that the exercise would be conducted successfully and without disruption.

The Enugu North Senatorial District comprises six local government areas: Nsukka, Udenu, Uzo-Uwani, Igbo-Etiti, Igbo Eze North, and Igbo Eze South.

The by-election is being organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission to fill the vacant seat representing the district in the Senate.
