AT least 23 pupils have been kidnapped by gunmen following an attack on an ‘unregistered’ orphanage and school in the Zariagi area of Lokoja, Kogi State.
The attack, which took place yesterday evening, also saw the abduction of the proprietor’s wife.
According to the Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, the facility, identified as Dahallukitab Group of School was operating illegally in a remote, bushy location without registration or the knowledge of authorities and security agencies.
He explained that security operatives, led by the Nigeria Police Force, quickly responded to the incident. Their efforts led to the rescue of 15 of the abducted pupils, while operations are ongoing to locate and safely return the remaining eight victims and apprehend those responsible.
Fanwo lauded the swift and coordinated response of the security agencies, assuring residents that the state government remains committed to protecting lives and property.
He also warned against running schools, orphanages, or similar institutions in isolated areas without proper registration, noting that such practices expose occupants to serious security risks.
Operators were urged to comply with regulatory requirements and engage relevant authorities to ensure safety and oversight.
The state government said security operations are still underway and promised to provide further updates as the situation develops.
