LIVERPOOL are on the verge of completing their first transfer of the January window after agreeing a deal with PSV Eindhoven for Cody Gakpo.

The Netherlands international was seriously linked with a move to Manchester United but their bitter rivals have now secured the prolific forward.

“PSV and Liverpool FC have reached an agreement on the proposed transfer of Cody Gakpo,” the Dutch club announced last night.

“The 23-year-old attacker will leave for England imminently where he will be subjected to the necessary formalities ahead of the completion of the transfer.”

The clubs have not revealed transfer fee but it is believed to be around £50 million — £37m guaranteed fee plus £13m in add-ons.

“Both clubs are not making any announcements about the transfer fee, but this is a record transfer for PSV,” the general manager Marcel Brands said.

The PSV management said they completed the negotiations yesterday and gave Gakpo permission to travel to England.

Gakpo is one of the breakout stars in Europe this season, scoring 13 goals and making an impressive 17 assists in 24 appearances in all competitions.

He was The Netherlands’ top scorer at the Qatar 2022 World Cup with three goals as they reached the quarter-finals.
