KADUNA: KEDC maintains 6 killed in Zaria electrocution incident

THE Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company’s management has refuted media allegations that 11 people died in the power surge that occurred in the Gwargwaje neighborhood of Zaria, Kaduna State, last Wednesday.

According to the firm that supplies electricity to the states of Kaduna, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara, six persons were killed in the incident.

Naijatimes reported a high-tension line that was attached to a low-tension line snapped, causing an overload voltage supply in the Gwargwaje neighborhood of Zaria which caused an inferno to engulf some homes, claiming lives and injuring others.

According to Malam Bature Aliyu, the Ward Head of Unguwan Malam Shuaibu, one of the impacted districts in Gwargwaje, the number of casualties has increased from the initial 11, previously reported, to between 15 and 20, a figure which the management of Kaduna Electric disagrees.

In an interview with newsmen yesterday, Kaduna Electric’s Head of Corporate Communication, Abdulazeez Abdullahi, stated that six people had died from the company’s preliminary investigations.

He also said that company representatives had visited the Gwargwaje community and had three meetings with the families of the victims to express their condolences and gather pertinent information about the incident.
