LAGOS: Govt issues flood alert for Eti-Osa, Ojo, Badagry, Ikeja, Ikoyi

THE Lagos State Government has issued a new flood warning to residents in some areas of the state.

The state administration warned citizens to be cautious of heavy rainfall between August 14 and 18, in a statement signed yesterday by the Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources, Lekan Shodeinde.

The state warned residents of Apapa, Badagry, Eti Osa, Ikeja, Ikorodu, Ikoyi, Lagos Island, and Ojo to brace themselves for torrential rains that may cause flash floods this week and beyond.

Shodeinde encouraged all people of listed areas to be careful and watchful of rainfalls during and after the storm, citing a flood alert advisory issued by the Flood Emergency Warning System (FEWS) Central Hub of the Federal Ministry of Environment.

He also warned people of flood plains and low-lying areas to prepare to go upland until the rains stopped.

He reiterated that pedestrians and motorists should avoid wading through floods, especially during heavy rains, because they risk being carried away by the force of the water.

He noted that the warning has become necessary in order to avert the unnecessary loss of life and property that is generally associated with such incidences.
