NASS probes killing of vigilante members in Enugu

THE National Assembly has launched an investigation into the alleged brutal execution of members of a vigilante group by Nigerian Army personnel in Eke, Udi Local Government.

According to some sources, personnel from the Nigerian Army’s 82 Division opened fire on members of the Eke Vigilante Group who were on their way to react to a distress call in their town, killing two of them, including a woman, and injuring three others.

The ad hoc committee of the House of Representatives, led by its chairman, Sanni Abdulraheem, met with Enugu State Deputy Governor Ifeanyi Ossai yesterday and assured him of their determination to unearth the truth and deliver justice.

He revealed that they are in the state on a fact-finding mission to know what happened and bring the offenders to justice.

The purpose of their meeting with the state’s deputy governor is clear: to grieve with the government and to explain the breadth of the job with him.

The deputy explained to the delegate the government’s vested interest in the case and why the job must be done with utmost care.

He also requested that the lawmaker make some budgetary allocation for the state’s security because of its uniqueness in the region.

Following the discussion, the team went to the state assembly for a public hearing to hear all sides of the story.

According to the speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, who greeted the delegation, nothing will be more fulfilling than bringing the culprits to justice.

They also made a brief trip at the hospital where the gunshot victims were being treated, which was reassuring for the victims and their families.

Adding that as residents await the outcome of the investigation, they will want to see the end of such assaults from officers whose primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and security of Nigerians.
