AHEAD of the February 21 Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has declared Friday, February 20, 2026, a work-free day and approved a temporary restriction of movement across the territory.
The announcement was made today during a special broadcast aired on national television and radio stations.
Wike encouraged residents of the FCT to turn out in large numbers to vote for candidates of their choice in the upcoming polls.
According to a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the restriction of movement will take effect from 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 20, and remain in place until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2026.
Security agencies have been directed to ensure full compliance with the order.
In his address, Wike described the election as a significant opportunity for residents to determine the future of the FCT through the selection of chairmen and councillors for the six area councils.
He urged voters to participate responsibly, respect electoral rules, and accept the outcome of the process peacefully.
The minister noted that the public holiday was approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to allow residents travel to their respective communities to take part in the elections.
He also acknowledged the President’s recent assent to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026, describing it as a demonstration of commitment to credible, transparent, and fair elections.
Wike further emphasized that democracy remains an evolving process and stressed the importance of continuous review of electoral laws to strengthen democratic institutions.
He urged all eligible residents to make their voices heard at the polls, expressing hope that the elections would produce capable leaders who would promote development, peace, and prosperity within the FCT.
