THE governor of Cross River state, Bassey Otu, has ordered the immediate suspension of all ticket sales, levies, and related charges imposed on inter-city transport operators across the state.
The decision followed discussions between the state government and representatives of the Inter-City Drivers Association, who had raised concerns over the growing burden of multiple ticketing and excessive charges affecting their operations.
The directive was announced yesterday in a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary and Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Linus Obogo.
According to the statement, the suspension takes effect immediately and will remain in force until further notice.
The governor’s order covers every form of ticket issuance, levy collection, and associated charges currently being enforced by government officials and security personnel on inter-city transport operators.
All government agencies and security operatives involved in collecting or enforcing such payments have been instructed to comply fully with the directive.
The state government explained that the move is aimed at addressing the concerns of transport operators while creating a more enabling environment for businesses to thrive.
As part of efforts to find a long-term solution, the government also disclosed plans to convene a stakeholders’ meeting involving key players in the transport sector.
The engagement is expected to produce a sustainable framework that balances the interests of transport operators, commuters, and government authorities.
The suspension is anticipated to ease the financial pressure on transport operators, many of whom have repeatedly complained about the impact of multiple ticketing systems and numerous levies on their businesses.
Reaffirming its commitment to economic growth, the government stated that it remains focused on implementing policies that improve the ease of doing business and enhance the welfare of residents across the state.
According to the statement, the latest intervention reflects Governor Otu’s determination to reduce the burden on citizens and transport operators while advancing his administration’s development agenda and vision of prosperity for Cross River State.
